The Lyon family

1066 - 2015

My name is Michael Hewitt. A friend who is a Lyon was told by her father “always be proud of the Lyon name ”. I started to research her English family four years ago and was astonished to find the history of this remarkable family.  This eventually led to writing a book about my findings.

This is an extraordinary family that has survived and prospered for over 900 years in England, Scotland and America and then over much of the world. There are over 1 million members of the Lyon family who are descendants of a handful of people who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066.

In the early days in Scotland they served all the Scottish kings from the 14th Century until James VI  of Scotland (James I of England) in the 17th century.

This, despite the fact that many of the Lyon family were murdered, died in battle and even burned at the stake and some lived short lives because of jealousy and greed. They survived many tragedies and triumphs and finally produced Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon who became the mother of the present Queen Elizabeth II.

A handful of family members moved to America in the 1600’s and multiplied  to become influential in the growth of America.

In any family of such longevity there are many high-spots and also scandals, there is overall a story of great achievements whether serving royalty or in their local communities all over the world.

This book is dedicated to the whole family and those who are related to them as a tribute to their remarkable success.
